Monthly subscription boxes are an original concept. Subscribers pay to receive t-shirts and other items. The model is used by companies like Dollar Shave Club, Fancy, Graze, Loot Crate and Fancy Crate. However, Mojang is a newcomer to the market. That's right, Minecraft now has its own swag box.
For a monthly fee of $30, Mojang says it will send its subscribers a special "Mine Chest" full of "hand-picked official, Minecraft goodies." Although the exact items aren't available Mojang claims that customers can expect a tshirt, crafting recipes, and other collectibles each month.
MineCon 2015 saw the unveiling of the Mine Chest for the first time. Mojang released 5,000 beta keys available to attendees so they could secure the first boxes, but now it's open to everyone. While it may sound like the perfect gift for anyone who's a Minecraft fan However, it comes with a few stipulations.
Mojang first requires that customers select a monthly plan. The payment is made in advance, and shipments don't begin until May. Mojang says that paying upfront helps it better serve customers by purchasing premium items in higher quantities, which will lower costs. Each month, the Mine Chest will be charged $7 shipping. Finally, Mine Chests are currently only available in the US. Mojang is blaming high shipping costs for its exclusivity, however, it says it is "working extremely hard" in order to bring them down.
