The Bay Area Tutoring Association has been in operation since 1941. "The Bay Area Tutoring Association has been dedicated to providing high-quality academic tutoring to children from various walks of life and with various levels of difficulty. We are committed to developing our members as responsible citizens who contribute to the well being of our region by helping to advance the educational, athletic and cultural interests of our residents." Membership today is limited to teachers, coaches, administrators and other professional education related personnel in various public and private educational facilities. Our tutors are also limited to teaching at specific times and subject areas.
There are two areas of excellence our tutoring services encompass. There is professional development and instructional development. Professional development involves supervising the preparation and tuition of graduate level degrees in various disciplines, such as mathematics, science, engineering, business, criminal justice, social work, administration and other business-related fields. Instructional development entails preparing students in preparation for state and local licensing exams and serving them on a volunteer basis in a health care, counseling, juvenile or elder care setting. Most of our tutoring centers offer instructional development in a full range of subjects including mathematics, reading, writing, English, history, geography, science, technology, history, and more. For those areas where professional development is required we also provide computer tutoring services.
bay area tutoring associations have many professional development activities and ongoing projects. The most prominent among these is the Bay Area Math Challenge, which began in 1986. This is a voluntary group effort that brings together adults, parents and students in the Bay Area, who are interested in math, science, and other related courses. Our tutoring partners consist of residents of the five counties surrounding San Francisco, plus people from several other states.
The main goal of the Bay Area Math Challenge is to connect the parents and children who are most at need in the bay area, by providing hands on education, by involving the parents in the process of selecting their preferred tutoring partner and by connecting the children with a diverse group of supportive, caring people. In addition to the math department, the Bay Area Math Challenge also offers online tutoring services, voice lessons, and CD based learning sessions. Currently, our tutoring partners are offering learning videos, voice lessons and online tutoring services. Some of our participants are using these learning options to supplement the materials that they receive at home. One of the reasons that our tutoring partners feel that these online tutoring services are so useful is that it gives them an opportunity to interact with other students, thus enhancing the learning experience.
