Microsoft Has Acquired Minecraft for $2.5 Billion

Microsoft today announced that Mojang and Minecraft would join its ranks. However, it will continue to make the game accessible on Xbox and PC as well as iOS, Android, and PlayStation. Microsoft claims that they initially spoke about bringing the title to Xbox and then discovered their immense success and decided to acquire Mojang to "diversify the games it offers."

Founders Markus "Notch" Persson, Carl Manneh and Jakbok Porser have left the company following the acquisition that the team announced. The reaction of the community to this announcement is likely to be mixed, and the most dedicated Minecraft players who have been playing the game since its infancy beginnings are likely to be skeptical of the new owners of the company, but reasoning behind the purchase is sound. I don't consider myself to be a real game developer. I make games because it's fun, and also because I am a gamer and love to program however I don't create games with the goal of them becoming huge successes, and I don't try to change the world. People are raving about how Minecraft has changed the world. I never meant for it to change anything. It's flatteringand interesting to slowly get in the public spotlight.

A while ago, I made the decision to step down from Minecraft development. Jens was the ideal person to run it and I was looking for new ideas. Although I tried to make it big initially but it ended up failing. But, since I decided to stick to small prototypes, interesting challenges, and I have enjoyed so much at work I've never looked back. I wasn't certain how I would fit into Mojang where people do actual work, but because people said I was important to the culture, I stayed.

I was home with a bad cold a few weeks ago when the internet went wild with rage against me due to an EULA situation which I had nothing to deal with. I was confused. I didn't understand. That was my frustration. Later, I saw the This is Phil Fish video and realized that I didn't have the relationship I believed I had with my followers. I have become a symbol. I don't want to be a symbol. I don’t want to be accountable for something I don't understand. That I don't want to work on. I'm not an entrepreneur. I'm not an executive director. I'm a geeky programmer who loves posting my opinions on Twitter.

After the deal is concluded and signed, I'll leave Mojang to go back to web-based experiments and Ludum Dares. I'll probably end any project that I accidentally create that gains traction.

Given my public image, which is already a bit disorganized, I don’t expect to be able to ignore negative comments, but at least I won't feel the need to read them.

I'm aware that this is in contradiction to a lot of what I've stated in public. I don't have a solid answer to this. I also know that many of you have used me as a symbol to represent an apparent struggle. I'm not. I'm a human being and I'm struggling with you.

I am so grateful for you. You are all amazing. Thank you for making Minecraft into what it has become, but there are too many of you, and I'm not able to be the sole person to be responsible for something this massive. In one sense, it's a part belonging to Microsoft now. In a much bigger sense, it's been owned by everyone for a long time, and that will never change.

It's not just about the money. It's about my mental health.

Week 40: Bath

It wasn't the best start to the week. We discovered a leakage of water from the bath on Monday morning. The water was leaking through the ceiling into my rack, the server cabinet that houses the boiler fusebox and boiler. The router was dead and fizzing however we didn't short the electrical circuits. It could have been more serious. The culprit was the shower head that was housed in its holster but was left on its lowest setting to dribble water down through the bath to the room below.

- I had a dentist appointment at 9am that morning, so the added stress was not a good idea! I was a bit stressed as I reflected on my sloppy home under the glowing lights but it was good.

- That evening the worry was that there was water pooled under the bath, so I attempted to take off the side panel by cutting away the sealant with an Stanley knife. This proved a waste of time since I discovered that our bathroom was fitted with tiles and its underside was made inaccessible. Great.

My dad came to the bathroom to seal it and assure us that it would work perfectly. It appears we'll have to dry out the cupboard and repair/repaint the ceiling and wall at some point.

In preparation for their Jubilee party The boys have been learning about the Queen in school. The whole school came together to enjoy a Jubilee tea celebration after the school decorated their playground with red, blue and white bunting. They can each be able to tell me the age of their mother, and other royal facts they've learned.

We purchased an Nintendo Switch. H had been longing for one but it wasn't the right moment. He was too young. They were out of stocks. The price was usually marked up and so on. However, with the John Lewis offer we purchased the latest OLED version, extra Joy-Cons, and three games: Minecraft, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario 3D World (with Bowser's Fury). It's as well-designed as I would imagine and the games are as great as I would have expected from Nintendo.

We made it clear that this would be the family Switch to ensure that his younger brother (and father!) can play and he wouldn't claim it as his. He was beaming with excitement when we showed him the box. It was thrilling to see it in action, but nothing can compare to the joy it brought to his life.

How popular is the mobile version of Minecraft? It's pretty dang popular according to developer Mojang's latest blog post. According to Mojang, which was recently purchased by Microsoft, Minecraft: Pocket Edition is bigger than Texas and 23x more hot than the Sun and "more than the entire universe." Of course If you're looking to find actual statistics Mojang has one those, too 30,000,000. This is the amount of times the pint-sized version of the game has been purchased.

Minecraft: Pocket Edition was released long before the free-to play trend was a "thing". It sells for US$6.99 on the iOS App Store and Google Play and hasn't had any price adjustments. This means that the game has brought in around $210 million in revenue. That's a lot of cheddar, and given its high App Store ranking it's likely to continue to earn money for a longer time.

The 'Minecraft Earth' Beta Begins its Global Takeover This Month

It's been about two months since we first heard about Minecraft Earth, the augmented real-world version of the game that gives the real world a playscape full of your blocky creations. The company had promised that an early version of the game would be out this summer. The game is now available, and with a new trailer of the game, the company says it will launch on iOS within the next two weeks. Android will follow "soon following that."

The launch on the iPhone isn't too surprising after we got our first peek at live gameplay during WWDC last month. The trailer gives a lot more details about the game. However, it's worth checking out the Apple demo to see the game's features and if you have any queries.

To be among the first players to gain access, you'll have to sign up for the free game right here (you'll require a device running at least iOS 10 or Android 7 to play, as per the FAQ). The game's access is restricted because they are adjusting load to the servers. However you must be active to play. If you do not play for seven consecutive days, someone else will take your slot. You'll require an account with Microsoft or Xbox Live account to register after which once you've signed up , there's nothing to do other than wait, and get ready to build.
